Yesterday was one of the NICEST days in 2011 and in the top 25 of my life.
While I hold my heart donor in my heart, thoughts and prayers each day, yesterday was a day to publicly praise and give thanks to my donor.
I was honored to attend the LifeBanc “Gift of Life Walk and Run”. Lifebanc is our local organ procurement provider, which is a fabulous group of caring individuals who take care of the records of organs of all the donors and recipients, as well as public awareness and training.
The event was beautiful, magical, and for many of us, myself included, it was very emotional.
Our team is comprised of many heart transplant recipients, one liver recipient and our friends and families. It is a GREAT team!!
The event opens with a ceremony in the “Legacy Garden”. It is a gorgeous garden where there are signs placed by many of the donors and recipients and / or their families. The ceremony included a short speech from a donor Mom, a poem and there is an incredible balloon launch in honor of our donors. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was playing as the balloons were released. There were hugs as the tears flowed, there were prayers being sent to heaven. Love and God surrounded the thousands in attendance.
For me personally, this has been a summer of ups and downs with the death of my Mom (and dealing with boxes and boxes of memories), a recent loss of a transplant friend …. but yesterday changed all that.
The day was about my donor, our donors ….. those that gave us life after their own deaths. A selfish act of kindness that is beyond words to describe.
If you aren’t a donor, please, please, please register to become one …… BECOME SOMEONE’S HERO!
I also want to thank my family, LifeBanc, my team co-captains, my kindred hearts that could attend, and ALWAYS my anonymous donor.
