Who Speaks For You?

I’m a procrastinator when it comes to some things. Especially legal things. I think it has more to do with me not wanting or willing to face the “future” than anything else.

I’ve always known that I should have had a living will, but I never followed through with my wishes, wants and desires. Instead, I had told family members if (A) happens, then (X); if (B) happens, then (Y) and if (C) happens, then (Z). You can kind of give general directions, but you can’t think of everything.

We all thought, …. this will never happen and looked at it as a “no problem” type of deal. We simply can’t sit and guess what might happen in life and try to cover each and every issue.

Fast forward through time and suddenly ……. here I was, comatose in a hospital bed, near death and in need of a new heart. A place that I NEVER ever thought I would find myself. In fact, me needing an organ transplant of any kind NEVER crossed my mind at any point in my life. (Author’s note : I recently found out that you are more likely to NEED an organ transplant, than to become a donor …. a pretty sobering fact.)

So, with emergent speed my family set forth as my ambassadors, my spokespersons. They did relay to the powers that be, that indeed I’d want to be saved, if it were possible. That I these are my wishes (And, they were/ still are my desires). They were asked a multitude of times in the course of a few days, and they never wavered in their answers.

But, apparently at times, there was some skepticism, because I did NOT have a written, signed, duly notarized, signed, and sealed living will, or medical power of attorney.

How could they be sure????? I couldn’t speak!

Fortunately, a couple of decades earlier, an action that I took, allowed me to “speak” from my coma. That action was registering as an organ donor …… that little red heart on my driver’s license said ….. “Yep, he truly cares!” And, thus it helped and I went on the UNOS list and the rest is history.

I know I might be stretching it a bit, but just by registering to be an organ, helped save my life.

I am BEGGING you to PLEASE register to become an organ donor, which you can do RIGHT here ~http://www.organdonor.gov/  (Select your state from the drop down box on the upper right corner)  And, I’m going to ask you to talk to your family about your wishes, and then join me as I stop my own procrastination by getting the legal documents stating said wishes, signed and notarized.
