Thankful Things

For every moment of joy
Every hour of fear
For every winding road that brought me here
For every breath, for every day of living
This is my Thanksgiving

For everyone who helped me start
And for everything that broke my heart
For every breath, for every day of living
This is my Thanksgiving

Don Henley – My Thanksgiving

************************************************************

Today, the day of THANKS, has many meanings to many people. I’m going to share a few of my thoughts about today …..

For me, EVERY day is Thanksgiving. Actually, there is a restaurant here called “Thanksgiving Every Day” and they serve Thanksgiving dinner there every day of the year.

But today is not about food. Not for me.

Today is about being able to give thanks for EVERYTHING. No, not just the good things, but also the not so good, the negative stuff as well. Because without the “bad” the “good” wouldn’t exist, or wouldn’t make us happy.

For instance, and some might think I’m some sort of masochist for even thinking this ….. I’m thankful I had a heart attack over five years ago that lead to a heart transplant. I’m thankful because it not only has given me many extra days of life, but it has also given me some of the best people to have ever touched my life. People that saved my life, and continue to keep me running as well as can be expected in a physical sense ….. my doctors, my nurses and so many technicians and wonderful staff members at the Cleveland Clinic. And I will eternally THANKFUL for those people who have touched me along my life’s journey over the years that have become my closest friends that during some of their darkest days have saved me from myself, taught me, inspired me and have become some of the GREATEST people to have ever touched my life.

Thus I am thankful for the good and the bad …. I have learned that the bad, leads us down the path to the good.

I’m truly thankful for the salty tears I’ve shed, for fear, pain, anger, weakness, sadness, uncertain times, grief, stress and yes, even my sins.

For all the negative things have taught me to be humble, to love, to be compassionate and to give. There’s a lot to be said for humility. I’m still learning and still growing and hopefully will until I take my last breath.

I’m learning, I’m growing and I’m ALIVE!!

I am thankful for YOU!! I LOVE you ALL, deeply!!

Today is also a bit special in another reason today …… I am honored to be celebrating another year of life with my family.

And all of this was possible because someone, or even possibly their family …. most likely from the Nashville Tennessee area had the desire to extend someone else’s life through organ donation. This anonymous person and their family will always be in my daily thoughts and prayers. My donor most likely passed away on May 10th, 2007. My thanks for their gift can never be truly measured. May God always bless their soul.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
