The Old Man

“He earned his love through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand”

~ Leader of the Band, Dan Fogelberg

I remember vividly the day, the time, the place ……

That year, I had worked through the entire holiday period to give some much-needed time off to some of my co-workers. Once the holidays had ended, my plan was to take a week off. I had purchased an old Mercedes-Benz, and the plan was to have the car ready to paint after my week of vacation.

I was sanding on the car in the garage, that cold, snowy January morning when the frantic call came from my Mom. “Dad had been in an accident and taken to the hospital!”

The next couple of hours are now blurred by the passing of time and the speed of the events that morning. Dad had passed away from a heart attack while driving. The accident was an “after the fact” moment at the end of his life.

Tomorrow, it will be 25 years since that date. Like many father-son relationships we had our up and downs. We fought a number of times, yet we respected each other. As in the lyrics above ….. “Took me years to understand“. But, I do understand.

My dad gave me a lot in the years we were together. A great work ethic, drive, the ability to reason, to think, a lot of understanding and love. He also gave me some not so positive genetics that lead me to a heart transplant, and I thank God for those gifts as well. The journey through life and the resulting transplant brought a whole new group of loving people into my life.

Tomorrow, marks the 25th year of my dad’s last heartbeat ……. I will NEVER forget.

Thank and love you, Dad!!!

What a great post — and a great tribute to your dad. I’m guessing he would have been very proud of the man you have become.
