2,500 Days and Nights of Gratitude From a Transplanted Heart

“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.”

~ Tecumseh

Two thousand, five hundred days ago, today, I was reborn. Specifically, on May 11th, 2007, I received the gift of life by way of a heart transplant from an anonymous donor, that was rumored to have been from the great state of Tennessee.

Fifteen hundred days ago … on my 1,000th day, I wrote a blog post, that included one of the thank you notes I have sent my donor family. The title of that post was “1,000 Extra Days, a Million Thanks”, which you can read HERE!

I know some people laugh, that I count (with help from Excel) each and every day of extra life I’ve been given. But I am ETERNALLY grateful to my donor and my donor family for giving me a second chance at life. I count the days, because each and everyone has been special for some reason. It may be from a morning bird singing its song, to the way the moonbeams stream through broken clouds at night. Sleet rattling off the living room windows can be special. Even on those horrendous days when I have lost friends or family members, there was a simple reason to be grateful. Each day is filled with gifts.

I know when I worked, I hated Mondays ….. the worst day of the week. Now, I love Monday as much as I like any other day of the week. Each day is different, each day deserves our thanks. Every time you think you are having a “bad” Monday (or any other day), think of the people in the hospital that are fighting to stay alive. No comparison!

“Every day is a day to be thankful. Life’s abundance has no limit, and gratitude is what keeps that abundance flowing. In every circumstance there is something for which to be thankful. Even when there seems to be nothing else, there is hope.” ~ Ralph Marston

I’ve been told that my donor family has moved and left no forwarding address, but if they ever happen to run across my words, this is from me to them ~

During our lives we make choices. Lots of them. We often never realize how important some of these choices are or how they will impact others. The choice that you and your loved one made at some point, lives on within me each and EVERY day. I try to be a positive living legacy of your loved one. I strive daily to live a grateful and thankful life in his/her honor. Your gift of life has not only given me life, it has also opened my eyes and my soul. I pray for you daily and ask God to watch over you and bless you each day. Thank you notes will never completely convey the gratitude that lives on within my heart. I send my love to you, always! – DAP (My2ndHeartBeat)
