Kristy, Always There, Always Smiling, Forever

I won’t speak for all heart transplant recipients, but of those that I know, I’d venture to say that the heart transplant journey changes many of us. If you’ve ever been on the cusp of death, it truly increases your love of life, family and friends. After a transplant, many of us have a true respect for death.

I’ve lost a number transplant friends in the past 7+ years and they are all difficult. A year ago, I lost a great friend. I met her early in her heart transplant journey.

Not long before I met her, she had been diagnosed with “Peripartum Cardiomyopathy”,  they had taken her baby a couple months early and she was in severe heart failure. And, as sick as she was at that time during that initial meeting, she had a smile that I’d NEVER forget.

Not long after we met, she had a LVAD (Left Ventricle Assist Device) implanted and it would help her heal and regain strength until she would under go a life saving heart transplant a few months later.

No matter how sick she was, how crappy she felt, she always had a smile, she always had a laugh and a hug to share. She’d talk endlessly about her baby that was born early (Hunter), about her husband Chad, and her entire family. She had a true love for life. A true supporter of organ donation and of other women that had also gone through PPCM (Peripartum Cardiomyopathy). In short, she was an amazing person.

A year ago today, she went to heaven. The day after, I posted the following on a different blog –

Kristy Kress

04/26/1977 – 02/07/2014

Yesterday, Feb 7, 2014 we lost a beautiful friend and teammate.

Kristy Kress left us and is flying with the angels now.

She will forever be in our hearts.

Please keep Chad and Hunter in your thoughts and prayers.

We will pass along additional information as it becomes available.

Kristy ~ God Bless you and know that you are loved and missed.

I know the past year has been rough for so many people ….. her husband, her son and her family and close friends especially. It has also been difficult on those of us in her transplant family …… tears came a number of times today, and each time I’d look at a picture of her smiling ……. I know she’s smiling down on us.

Still missed and always loved!

I don’t think you ever get over the loss of a loved one and I hope her family is finding ways to deal with the grief. Blessings, thoughts and prayers to those that mourn her passing.
