Honoring a Legacy

If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.

~ Maya Angelou

Without God, Benny Keith Ward, Lifebanc, friends, family and an amazing team of Doctors, nurses and caregivers @  Cleveland Clinic this post would not be possible.

As the days in our lives come and go, this past Sunday was one that I will never forget. For the 8th year in a row I was able to walk with friends and family in an event that not only raises money in support of organ donation, but it is also an event where organ donors, organ recipients and those that are waiting for a life saving organ transplant get together and celebrate life, mourn losses and laugh and cry together. The beauty of this event can’t truly be described in mere words.

This was the first year at this event where I was able to publicly honor the legacy of the man who saved my life. Benny Keith was with me every step of the day, pushing me encouraging me ……… we walked off under some trees early in the morning and said a few prayers of thanks and the tears flowed. He walked beside me among the 3,000 other folks that were in attendance. While many did not see him, my friends did …… and I saw their angels walking next to them as well. Benny Keith was with me as I walked onto a stage to take part in a Legacy ceremony honoring our generous donors and their families and celebrate the lives of recipients ……. he steadied me and help check my tears as we listened to a beautiful donor Mom speak about her amazing daughter, and the fantastic legacy she left behind, the lives she saved. As the event ended, during the closing chaos with people all around us,  Benny Keith and I said another prayer …… of never-ending gratitude.

He was with me the entire time, as he is every day! He is my HERO!!

Emotions ruled the day …… as the always do at this event …… we laughed, and joked ………. we hugged and held each other …….. we prayed …….. we cried and most importantly we REMEMBERED those that gave us such an amazing gift …… LIFE!

If you are not already a registered organ donor, I ask you to consider doing so. Save a life, be a hero!
