Thirteen Years!

“My story is filled with broken pieces, bad choices and some ugly truths. It is also filled with major comeback, peace in my soul, and grace that saved my life.”

Today, I celebrate the 13th anniversary of my heart transplant. This year, due to the COVID-19 virus, it will be a different kind of celebration, without seeing family and friends.

Today is a day of celebrating life …… not just my extended life, but also the life of my donor, Benny Keith Ward. Today will be filled with smiles and well wishes via texts and calls from family and friends and at the same time, there will be sorrow, grief and lots of tears for my donor and his family.

I’m filled with gratitude for so very much. To God and for my donor. For family and friends and their constant support. For the amazing team of doctors and nurses that placed Benny Keith’s heart inside my chest, and that check on me on a regular basis and keep me alive. I thank you all, as I couldn’t have made this journey without any of you!

This gift, this journey has changed me forever. I pray for Benny Keith and his family and ask God that the gift I received from him has helped give added meaning to his short life. He truly is my HERO.

“Thirteen roadways lead through life, thirteen doors of death, homeward from foolish fears and strife we float on failing breath.”
