Music ~ My Top 10 List

Music is and always has been a huge part of my life. I do not play any music, I can’t sing ….. in all honesty, I make up my own words to songs most of the time. I simply enjoy music. Always have, always will. I’ve written about music a number of time in this blog. Some of those posts are here, here, here and here.

.
I was asked a while back to list my “Top 10” songs, if I was trapped on a deserted island with only one CD, with only ten songs on it and why they were important to me.

I’ve given this a TREMENDOUS amount of thought and have I have even asked a few well respected friends of mine for their songs. This musical journey has been interesting because once again it shows that as much as we are a like, how different we really are.  Truly the way we are in every sense of the word, different.

.
It’s been almost four years since my transplant, and that journey hasn’t changed my likes / dislikes in music. Four years ago, this still would probably have been my Top 10 list.
My music tastes run the gambit, there are songs that I enjoy that are hard & soft rock, blues, country, operas, musicals and almost ever genre there is, including some obscure tunes.

.
But, when I dig deep down inside myself, these are my favorites, and why.
In no particular order, I present my Top 10. Let your analysis begin.

.
Norwegian Woods, Beatles ~ To me this is one of the best songs the Beatles ever did. It has this peaceful quality about it and that spoke of discussions long into the night, drinking wine …… relaxing at its best.
Sweet Child O’Mine, Guns and Roses ~ The title screams to me about my never ending love for children. I will NEVER forget losing two sons early in life and treasuring the son that remains. This song is and has been the ringtone on my cell phone for a LONG time!
Hotel California, Eagles ~ I could listen to this song forever. Its heaven and hell at the same time. Seems a little cliché’, but it’s one of MY all time favorite.
Rosalinda’s Eyes, Billy Joel ~ An early Billy Joel , Latin sounding tune that I have listened to for decades now. To me it was hard work, leaving to follow his heart, but with the promise to return.  Like many of us in our youth.
Candle in the Wind, Elton John ~ Either version is fine, the Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana ~ we all know too many people who were taken from us too early. My dad and my grandfather always come to mind when I hear this song.
Iris, Goo Goo Dolls ~ This is one of my top two favorite songs. The lyrics are beautiful, moving and powerful. It was one of the songs on the soundtrack of the movie, “City of Angels”, which is one of my favorite movies.
Arms of an Angel, Sarah McLachlan ~ The other of my top two favorite songs and also from the movie, City of Angels. It has a few different meanings to me. Earlier, I’d think of my grandmother when I heard this song. Later, after my transplant, the opening line screamed to me …. “Spend all your time waiting for that second chance” ……. I got that second chance, all thanks to an angel.
I’ll Do Anything For Love, Meatloaf ~ I’ve always loved the musical part of this song. Its driving rhythms, hard beats are great to listen to while working out, or flying down the highway. To me the meaning is deeper than the simple words ….. it’s more about acceptance, and not violating one’s own principles to please others.
Always On My Mind, Willie Nelson ~Another song that has a deeper meaning to me, beyond just the words. I’m one that always second guesses himself and is always pushing for self-improvement. My loves were always on my mind ….. loves were not only relationships, but also work, activities I participated in, etc …… “You were always on my mind”
What A Feeling, Irene Cara ~  I’m not a dancer and never have been. But, if I ever was, I’d dance to this song. For a long time it was one of very favorites. This line is what all music is to me “Now I hear the music, close my eyes, I am rhythm; In a flash it takes hold of my heart.”

.
Great music does take a hold of my heart …… both my native and borrowed hearts. Good music consumes me, my soul, my being.

If you could only have ten songs with you, what would they be? I’d love to hear YOUR selections and why!!

Today is the best day of my life and thank you for being a part of it!!

Music makes my heart sing!
